If Graham allowed us to swear above the cut, I would one hundred percent have started this post with a string of expletives. Because Warhammer-themed sports game Blood Bowl 2 is utterly maddening. Oh no. The problem, crucially, is the anatomy of a Blood Bowl 2 loss. Typical — you wait fifteen years for a Vampire game, and they go and announce two practically side by side. Yet it wasn’t until the third edition dropped in that Blood Bowl became recognisable as the game it is today.

I will keep this short. The game is brilliant. The dice can, and often will, turn a perfectly planned attack into disaster at the final hurdle. Just like the original boardgame. Of course! But that same rule applies to the opponent and nothing is more satisfying than blocking an ogre with a goblin when they roll triple skulls.
The AI and dice rolling is unbalanced as hell. Only play in short bursts.

In that moment of bizarre brilliance, two things were born. The other creation in that moment was Blood Bowl, and while it took a while to evolve into the game we see today, it is amazing. The combination of diverse teams and fantasy species, American football, rugby, RPG mechanics, and a dash of violence somehow comes together to form a really fun game.
After a long history with the franchise, including being sued by Games Workshop for creating a similar game in before being granted a license, French developer Cyanide has finally nailed adapting Blood Bowl to the PC. This is complicated by the fact that not all units and factions are created equal — ogres and goblins share the same pitch, and are far from the most exotic creatures to play the sport.
For a quick overview, the twenty-four different teams are roughly split into strength and agility focuses, with more exotic factions throwing in little curveballs of their own. A strength team is more likely to succeed by physically dominating the pitch, knocking down and potentially even killing opposing players as they bulldoze their way towards a touchdown. Agility teams are all about technique, making use of handoffs and passes to send the ball flying down the field.
Player skills add another layer of strategy, making units better in ways that go beyond a raw stat increase. Cyanide has reduced this complexity through an easy-to-read user interface. The game clearly illustrates what each move will involve before you commit to an action, and how likely each step is to succeed. If any special player skills are involved, those are shown as well.
While this is pretty simple stuff, it is fundamental to how players interact with the game. Creating a team is also a breeze.
Blood Bowl was originally a tabletop miniatures game released by that most holy of British institutions, Games Workshop, back in the ’80s. Yet it wasn’t until the third edition dropped in that Blood Bowl became recognisable as the game it is today. It’s set in a version of the Warhammer Fantasy Universe where the many opposing races have decided to lay down their arms and settle their differences by trying to score touchdowns.
As such, it exists as both a parody of medieval fantasy tropes and as an irreverent jab at the ridiculousness of modern, organised sport. Your players will sometimes steal funds from the team’s treasury, violent fans will invade the pitch and injure your squad at half-time, and referees can be bribed before each game to ignore fouls and concealed weapons. The reason I’m telling you this is because I want to impress upon you just how silly Blood Bowl is.
Chaos League was Blood Bowl in all but name, and, considering its In this version, players could not level up and the Dark Elf team was sold Even in Cyanide’s public matchmaking leagues – the primary way to get into.
Blood Bowl is a fantasy football game that has been around for years. I mean real fantasy football with elves and dwarfs, ogres and trolls. The one that is so steeped in history and lore that even when Games Workshop pulled the plug the community rose up and kept it going strong. You can also win by beating the crap out of your opponent arguably not the best strategy, but I have seen it happen.
Players have four separate ability scores and a skill list encompasses things that affect how certain aspects of the games work. The random elements can be daunting for a starting player and bad dice can cost you the game. It could be the first roll you make or the last, so there is definitely a strategy to the order in which you activate your pieces. This somewhat abstract mechanic speeds up game play, which is a necessity given that each team takes 16 turns over the course of a game. Unlike most miniature games, there is a perpetual system in which your players advance and skill up.
You might be fielding a named special character in a match, but this Star Player is mercenary who willing to play for the highest bidder. Many shops in my area host leagues in which people get together and play once a week.
